A compendium of sketches, 1 to 6 pages each, of 100 important advances in astronomy between 600 BCE and the present, plus a "directory" of one-paragraph descriptions of 35 astronomers not featured in the sketches. One striking thing, to my mind, is how little progress there was between the end of the classical civilizations and the late 1400s, when deadening and repressive religiosity reigned in the Western world -- the likes of Nicolaus Copernicus and Tycho Brahe came onto the scene not a moment too soon. As for exploits of the space age that began in 1957, the book's implicit definition of "astronomy" is liberal enough for it to include sketches of many of them. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione
