This play is about the original Blue Bird of Happiness, which Tyltyl and Mytyl are sent to find by their neighbourhood fairy. Each scene takes them to a different allegorical place - the Fairy Bérylune's palace; the Land of Memory where the children meet their dead grandparents and siblings; the Palace of Night; the Forest, where the trees that have been attacked by the children's woodcutter father come alive; the Palace of Happiness; the graveyard where the dead are rising (or perhaps not); and the Kingdom of the Future, inhabited by the souls of children waiting to be born. Massive spoiler alert: it turns out that they had the Blue Bird of Happiness at home all along, and in the last scene it escapes and the play ends with the children breaking the fourth wall asking the audience to help find it again.

This play was first performed in 1908 in Moscow, and became a Broadway hit in 1910, presumably jogging the minds of the Nobel committee (it is the most recent work by Maeterlinck mentioned in their citation). There's a lot more to work with than in Pelléas and Mélisande. Reading through it, I thought how expensive it would be to stage - each scene needs to an elaborate set, different from the rest; the first scene features the magical animation and personification of Tylo the dog, Tylette the cat, and the concepts of Bread, Sugar, Fire, Water and Milk; and there are lots of birds, some of them blue. Tylette the cat is a great villain, conspiring with Night against the children and the dog. The ending is pretty weak but the journey is rather entertaining. I'm not surprised that a Japanese anime studio managed to spin 26 episodes out of it in 1980 (on Youtube, dubbed into Italian, starting here). It would be easy to do this wrong, but fun to try and do it right. ( )

This delightful book is the story of a woodcutter and his children, who on Christmas Eve dream that a fairy comes to them and bids them to go on a dreamquest for the blue bird of happiness. Their unusual and entertaining adventures form the major part of this unique work.

Qui de ma génération ne se souvient pas de ce dessin animé et de son générique qui me donnait des frissons. Quand je me suis aperçue, il y a peu et par hasard, que ce dessin animé était inspiré d’une pièce de théâtre d’un écrivain belge un peu obscur pour moi, bien que Prix Nobel en 1911, je me suis dit que je ne pourrai pas résister à une petite parenthèse de nostalgie.
Cette lecture n’a pourtant pas été le divertissement enfantin auquel je m’attendais. Il n’y a pas véritablement d’histoire, plus une succession de scénettes dont les mille décors chatoyants et la myriade de personnages m’ont fait pensé à la féerie du Casse-Noisette de Tchaïkovski. Les actes sont d’ailleurs divisés en tableaux et les indications scéniques prennent parfois plus de place que les dialogues, donnant à l’œuvre toutes les apparences d’un livret de ballet.

A la demande de la fée Bérylune, le frère et la sœur Tyltyl et Mytyl sont à la recherche de l’Oiseau Bleu, seul capable de sauver la fille de la fée. Ils voyagent alors de tableau en tableau, qui tous représentent un aspect de notre monde, et rencontrent les allégories de notre condition humaine (la Mort, la Forêt, les Bonheurs, l’Avenir). Grâce à un diamant magique, ils peuvent voir au-delà des apparences et découvrir la vérité des choses, leur âme qui leur parle.
Je suppose que chacun de ces tableaux pourrait faire l’objet d’une interprétation symbolique, mais je ne m’y aventurerais pas. Il est question du dualisme entre Homme et Nature, entre Raison et Ignorance. Si les scènes sont aussi colorées que celles d’un dessin animé japonais, elles créent souvent un univers inquiétant, parfois grinçant, celui d’enfants sur le point de s’éveiller à la complexité du monde.
Je goûte assez peu les œuvres hautement symboliques, encore plus lorsqu’elles mêlent un langage simple, voire simpliste, avec la promesse d’un sens profond caché. Le genre d’œuvre qui pourrait certainement faire l’objet d’une analyse psychanalytique dont on ne peut décider si l’analyse semble plausible ou non.
Je n’ai donc pas particulièrement apprécié cette pièce de théâtre, mais elle pose de tels casse-tête de mise en scène que ce doit être un défi passionnant et qu’elle doit être intéressante à regarder. A voir plus qu’à lire je pense donc, et je préfère me souvenir de ce refrain qui reste celui d’un bon souvenir d’enfance… : « Car très loin dans le ciel / Vivait l'oiseau bleu du Bonheur / Que l'on dit éternel / Pour ceux qui ont toujours un cœur. »

My other reading - in French - has been Maeterlinck's 'Oiseau Bleu'; of course I have read it before in English and seen it on the stage, as you know, but I am absolutely delighted to read it again...I don't know why you have never read this glorious book before, but please do as I suggest & (though it is always dangerous, as we know, to recommend) I think you will have some real joy out of it. The scenes in the Temple of Night and in the Kingdom of the Future are exactly in our line.
