Both Masa and AHS [Arthur Hart-Synnot] saved each other's letters, but Masa's letters were lost during World War II. AHS's letters to Masa, however, survived, and authors Williams and Pagnamenta combed hundreds of them to provide a marvelous picture of this relationship as well as an excellent history of this critical period. The book is clearly and beautifully written. The only drawback is that, because her letters did not survive, Masa emerges as a rather hollow individual: we see her only through AHS's eyes. This book would serve as a great supplement for a course on modern Japan or early modern Asia. After all, who can resist a love story—especially one when, reading it, so much else will be learned?
Esteemed British journalists Peter Pagnamenta and Momoko Williams penned this tale of bittersweet love during a tumultuous time. This true story is drawn from the more than 800 letters a British officer and his Japanese lover exchanged over four decades. Arthur Hart-Synnot, a third-generation British officer, was sent to Japan in 1904 to learn the language of Britain's newest ally. Masa Suzuki, a beautiful Japanese woman scorned because of an early divorce, worked at the Tokyo Officers' Club. The two fell immediately in love and conceived a son before Arthur was whisked away by the military during WWI. Though Arthur would only see Masa little, he supported his Japanese family and kept alive the hope that he and Masa could live together blissfully. Revealed in this story of a passion that endured three wars is not only one couple's personal history, but the history of two completely different cultures. This is the true story of the unlikely love affair of a British Army officer and a Japanese woman. In 1904 Arthur Hart-Synnot was sent to Japan to learn the language of a new British ally and to observe action in the Russo-Japanese war. It is at this time that he falls in love with Masa Suzuki. The story of this unique relationship has been reconstructed from the more than 800 letters found preserved after Masa’s death in 1965. Arthur Hart-Synnod emerges as flawed human being. His values and emotional deficits are remnants of the 19th century. The authors use excerpts of Arthur’s letters to help Arthur and Masa come alive as sincere people trying, under impossible conditions, to preserve a loving relationship. It is a story of real people, not fiction and not an opera. It deals with both the mundane and the survival needs of two people caught in the catastrophic changes of the 20th century.
For the most part, I found it to be an interesting read. The personal tribulations of Masa, Arthur and their sons were balanced by historical references and the inclusion of photographs.
