The book then proceeds to give snow different names in its different forms, all of which are metaphors. For instance, when it comes on Christmas, the book calls snow "tradition". ( ) This book shows various images of snow and describes snow in many abstract, figurative ways. The language used in this book is highly figurative and involves vocabulary that may be unknown to some students. I would tend to lean towards clasifying this book as informational because it does not tell a story, but rather focuses on explainging and describing a certain thing- snow. However, it is a poor example of informational because there are no solid facts about snow, simply figurative and fanciful descriptions. While those have their place, I do no think they should be the entire focus of an informational book. Age Appropriateness: 1st - 4th Media: painting "Names for Snow," by Judi K. Beach was about the different names there are for snow. This deals with self identity because the snow itself is called and identified by so many different names. Each name has a different meaning. I don't think a child would relate to this on such a deep level, but it could definitely be explained to a child. Especially a child that is unsure with the person they are. Instead of a child accepting all of the stereotypic labels given to them, ask them who they are and who they want to be. This could have so much more meaning for that child. This is a fantasy and informational picture book. In this book, a groundhog asks her mother "what is snow?" Her mother decribes all kinds of snow sceneries. Sometimes those soft flakes floating down are wings of white butterflies, other times snow is a clever magician who makes the landscape disappear.
