The life of the great French painter, one of the founders of Impressionism, is narrated in lush comic art reminiscent of his style. From the Salon des Refuses ("Salon of the Rejected") and many struggling years without recognition, money, and yet a family to raise, all the way to great success, critically and financially, Monet pursued insistently one vision: catching the light in painting, refusing to compromise on this ethereal pursuit. It cost him dearly but he was a beacon for his contemporaries. We discover in this comics biography how he came to this vision as well as his turbulent life pursuing it.… (altro)

A graphic novel exploring the life of Monet. While his paintings are beautiful explorations of light, His personal choices are often selfish and frustrating. He spent most of his life in debt while never curbing his spending. I loved learning more about the other artists in the impressionist movement though. I also loved the way the artists incorporated guys art into their telling of his story. ( )

Another of those good biographies that skims quickly through the subject's life, creating a need for more information but serving well enough since in the end I doubt I will actually read a full biography of Claude Monet, especially since he seems to be one of those annoying starving artist types who treats those around him like crap.

The highlight here is the art which pays homage to Monet's style and his actual paintings, duplicating settings and people. The end matter is excellent, providing side-by-side comparisons of Monet's art and individual comic panels. ( )

I happened across this at the library while picking up a different graphic novel and after paging through it ended up bringing it home.

This is a lovely biography in graphic novel format. The artwork is simply beautiful.

Monet is another one of those people that I knew of but didn't know much about. This is a wonderful way to learn about both him and his work. It begins with a friend bringing Monet home after cataract surgery in 1923. While he is pondering the potential loss of his sight he reflects on his life and tells his own story.

I learned a lot about Monet as well as many other artists who were his friends and rivals.

The appendix was a wonderful addition to this. The author and illustrator showed photos of the real paintings by Monet and others that they used as inspiration for many of the panels in the book.

This is worth seeking out at your local library. ( )

Well crafted biography of Monet, taken from his point of view in graphic novel form. Illustrations supported the story well and the story really showed the ups and downs of this artists life and what he may have felt, been thinking. I gained a better understanding of the time, places, the general atmosphere of the artist world- the role of other artists, critics, and the public on art movements. At the end, some additional detail is given with reference to actual paintings which was informative and helped me gain more appreciation. ( )
