"There are ten stories here including one readers have waited ten long years for: in new novel-la The Border State Rowe revisits the world of his much-lauded story The Voluntary State. Competitive cyclists twins Michael and Maggie have trained all their lives to race internationally. One thing holds them back: their mother who years before crossed the border ... into Tennessee. Praise for Christopher Rowe: "Rowe's stories are the kind of thing you want on a cold, winter's night when the fire starts burning low. Terrific."--Justina Robson (Glorious Angels) "As good as he is now, he'll keep getting better. Read these excellent stories, and see what I mean."-Jack Womack (Going, Going, Gone) "Rowe's work might remind you of that of Andy Duncan. Both exemplify an archetypically Southern viewpoint on life's mysteries, a worldview that admits marvels in the most common of circumstances and narrates those unreal intrusions in a kind of downhome manner that belies real sophistication."--Asimov's "As smooth and heady as good Kentucky bourbon."--Locus Christopher Rowe's stories have been finalists for the Hugo, Nebula, World Fantasy, and Theodore Sturgeon awards, frequently reprinted, translated into a half-dozen languages, praised by the New York Times Book Review, and long listed in the Best American Short Stories. He holds an MFA from the Bluegrass Writer's Studio. Rowe and his wife Gwenda Bond co-write the Supernormal Sleuthing Series for children, and reside in a hundred-year-old house in Lexington, Kentucky"--… (altro)

I read these after the novella; most of the stories are set in the world of the Voluntary State of Tennessee, mostly during the reign of Athena Parthenus and the attempts of the people of Kentucky to deal with their ambiguous border status. The longest story, about bike racers whose mother was taken by a sentient river and whose father is off evangelizing against the Voluntary State, didn’t move me, but the overall world is startling and engaging, from car/horse hybrids to moles that eat entire coal seams to power the Voluntary State. There’s also one about a detective dog that seems set in a separate universe; it’s noir of course. ( )

"The Border State"
In a strange post-apocalypse Kentucky, setting off on a bicycle race across the state, the twin brother and sister faced the enemy of unknown nature. It combines the wildness of south border of US with advanced technologies rendered magical. ( )

Not sure if I can describe in any way that would do them justice how splendidly weird and wonderful and heartrending these stories are. The collision of the mechanical and natural worlds, the collision and collusion of the world of humans with the creations we/they make ... the ideas are tremendous and the execution gloriously painful and right. I received a copy of this book from LibraryThing, in exchange for an honest review. Science fiction, and dystopian fiction, is a genre outside my normal reading habits. But I found this collection of stories to be quite imaginative and captivating. Rowe is a good storyteller, and the collection is engaging. Well written, and a strong voice. I didn't know what to expect, but the stories were so creative and full, that I forgot my fantasy prejudices, and dove right in. ( )

An interesting but somewhat inconsistent book of short stories. I particularly like the novella that ends that collection, which is set in a near future America with an AI run amok, other folks living like the Amish and a majority of people seem to be cranially connected to cable TV. ( )
