Concurrentievoordeel begint waar Concurrentiestrategie, het boek waarmee Michael Porter grote bekendheid kreeg, eindigt. Liet hij in Concurrentiestrategie het wat en waarom van concurrentiestrategieën zien, in Concurrentievoordeel beschrijft hij het hoe; hoe kunnen de beste bedrijfsresultaten verkregen én behouden worden. Het boek biedt de strategische planner uitgebreide analyseschema's, waarmee hij de prestaties van zijn bedrijf voor de toekomst kan bepalen.
In Concurrentievoordeel introduceert Michael Porter het begrip 'waardeketen', een sleutelwoord in het onderzoek naar, en aanpak van álle activiteiten binnen een bedrijf op een geïntegreerde wijze.
Aan de orde komen onder meer:
- de waardeketen voor de verschillende bedrijfstakken
- het behalen van kostenvoordeel
- het voeren van een succesvolle differentiatiestrategie
- technologische ontwikkeling en concurrentievoordeel
- de noodzaak van een horizontale strategie
- het belang van een verdedigingsstrategie
- het voeren van een aanvalsstrategie
Concurrentievoordeel is een boek dat in Amerika veel succes heeft en dat geen enkele strategische planner zou mogen missen.

De bekende auteur gaat in op het bedrijfsresultaat in relatie tot concurrentiestrategie. De titel (concurrentievoordeel) legt hij uit als 'de kern van de prestatie van een bedrijf op concurrerende markten', oftewel hoe een bedrijf zijn concurrentie voordeel kan creeren en behouden. Uiteindelijk draait het dan om strategie. Maar Porter behandelt deze voor velen nogal vage materie op tal van aspecten binnen het kader van bedrijfseconomie. Zo komen ter sprake: kostenanalyse, technologie, diiferentiatie en selectie, onderlinge relaties en complementaire producten. De auteur behandelt strategie, maar ook de valkuilen, coordinatie en de verschillen in de behoeften. Het boek voldoet beslist aan een behoefte in een tijd waarin de concurrentie aan dynamiek toeneemt. Vooral voor grotere bedrijven bevat dit werk nieuwe invalshoeken. Weliswaar vlot geschreven, maar wel gericht op lezers die gewend zijn aan dit soort lijvige boeken over deelaspecten binnen bedrijfseconomische kaders.
