Scritto nel 1931 è un romanzo apertamente, e anticipatamente, femminista. Risente chiaramente l’influenza di Virginia Wolf anche per la parte centrale, molto introspettiva, nella quale la protagonista riavvolge il film della propria vita. E’ al tempo stesso un romanzo sulla vecchiaia, vista come il tempo in cui si fanno i conti con se stessi e si può essere, come la protagonista, finalmente liberi delle proprie scelte. E infine è uno spaccato di costume: uno sguardo sull’ Inghilterra eduardiana, aristocratica e conformista, ma anche eccentrica e anticipatrice. ( )

Ho riletto “Ogni passione spenta” dopo oltre vent’anni dalla prima lettura, leggendo invece per la prima volta l’introduzione della anglista Barbara Lanati, che ne coglie le analogie tra romanzo e vita personale della scrittrice. Il titolo del romanzo (All passion spent), tratto da “Sansone Agonista” di John Milton, è un po’ fuorviante, perché potrebbe far pensare a un libro sulla vecchiaia e, in un certo senso, potrebbe anche esserlo, ma è anzitutto il racconto di un risveglio alla vera vita, quella che non è scelta da altri o il frutto di un malinteso senso del dovere. Un libro che ho amato rileggere e dal quale continuo a trarre ispirazione per la mia crescita personale. ( )
