Matt Jensen is a man who takes life as it comes since losing his family years earlier. Matt Jensen was born Matt Cavanaugh but took the last name of Jensen since being mentored by Smoke Jensen when Matt was just a boy. Matt at one time was in an orphanage but ran away when it became too harsh a life, and he figured he could do better on his own. Now Matt is a man, and his skills are drawing attention, but it is his way of helping others that garners much respect and admiration.
Matt returns to Sugarloaf Ranch to get a new horse from his mentor Smoke. While there he receives a request for help from a woman who is facing hardship and a looming deadline to pay off a bank note. When Matt answers the call, he unknowingly puts his life on the line. As he travels, someone keeps taking pot shots at him, and there is someone behind all these attempts that Matt has yet to identify.
In the story the widowed Kitty Wellington is fighting a veritable army who wants her to lose the ranch and the horse business she has built from scratch. While Matt may be tempted by Kitty to spend time alone with her, he knows that with danger so close he must stay focused and uncover who is behind the attempt at stealing Kitty’s horse ranch.
