"An urgent, propulsive novel about a woman learning to negotiate her ailment and its various after effects via the simulacrum of a perfect romantic relationship In Catherine Lacey's ambitious second novel we are introduced to Mary, a young woman living in New York City and struggling to cope with a body that has betrayed her. All but paralyzed with pain, Mary seeks relief from a New Agey treatment called Pneuma Adaptive Kinesthesia, PAKing for short. And, remarkably, it works. But PAKing is prohibitively expensive and Mary is dead broke. So she scours Craigslist for fast-cash jobs and finds herself applying for the "Girlfriend Experiment," the brainchild of an eccentric and narcissistic actor, Kurt Sky, who is determined to find the perfect relationship--even if that means paying different women to fulfill distinctive roles. Mary is hired as the "Emotional Girlfriend"--Certainly better than the "Anger Girlfriend" or the "Maternal Girlfriend"--and is pulled into Kurt's ego-driven and messy attempt at human connection. Told in her signature spiraling prose, The Answers is full of the singular yet universal insights readers have come to expect from Lacey. It is a gorgeous hybrid of the plot- and the idea-driven novel that will leave you reeling."--… (altro)

Fair, but not much more, frankly. Reminiscent of Franzen and Rhinehart, yet with a short-story tinge that most authors keen on writing novels don't apply to their books. This one was interesting, but too fragmented, which is weird as the book is supposed to be fragmented, but in another way—at least to me. This is an easy, fairly quick read, entertaining yet not very fulfilling if one has read Burroughs, "The Green Man", Palahniuk, Amalia Gray, or seen any of the latest Hollywood films that have tried to emulate "Inception" in a most drab way. Still, there are some lines that caught my mind, which were very well written. ( )

Good in snatches, but I thought the different parts failed to work together. I didn’t think it ever delivered on the concept, which is great, but will keep an eye out for future novels given how strong Lacey’s short stories are. ( )

The Answers, from Catherine Lacey, has turned into one of the more difficult books I have tried to review. I plan to revisit the book in the near future after I have had a chance to think about it and, if it provides the provocative second reading I anticipate I will adjust my rating up to five stars. I could justify either four or five stars right now but want to let the ideas from the novel to synthesize with the thoughts they created in my mind and see what I get.

The writing is wonderful, not necessarily beautiful but works beautifully with the story. This is one of those novels where the tone is able to add to the meaning of the words themselves.

There are many uncomfortable moments, mostly the result of thinking through what has been said or shown and having a bad feeling about it. In this case I am talking about a bad feeling about the possibility that there might be some truth to what is there, or that there are really such people walking among us. In other words, the kind of bad feeling that comes from looking at relatively common things (illness, love, friendship, etc) from a different perspective that you haven't yet come to terms with.

I would highly recommend this novel to readers who don't mind a slow methodical story that still manages to twist and turn. There is a lot to ponder here. In my case I want to think about the types of people chosen for the experiment and how their personalities did or did not fit their role. Are they what they themselves desire least? Do they create self-fulfilling prophecies based on assumptions from their past experiences? These questions apply to the vast majority of us to some degree but could there be an even stronger correlation? Anyway, I think each reader will take from this what most interests her and consider the implications.

It was true I still sometimes wondered where he might be at that moment, wondered what he was doing, saying, feeling--I didn't know if that counted as love. And if it was, I couldn't tell if it was an unseen perk of the whole thing or a terrible, embittering tax.
