Philadelphia, Quaker William Penn's "City of Brotherly Love" and the home of Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell, is known the world over as the birthplace of the United States. Benjamin Franklin—famed diplomat, eccentric inventor, and publisher—was Philadelphia's postmaster as well as the founder of the renowned University of Pennsylvania. He was just one of the distinguished citizens who helped make the city the "Athens of America," which is the home of the Curtis Institute—one of America's premier music colleges—as well as such internationally celebrated cultural attractions as the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Franklin Institute science museum, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The city also has many architectural landmarks including the massive Second Empire-style City Hall, which at the time of its completion in 1894 was the grandest and most expensive public building ever built. Immigrants from Italy, Poland, and Russia have left and indelible stamp upon this once patrician city. Kensington was immortalized as Rocky's working-class neighborhood in theRockymovies. South Philadelphia with its famed Italian market is also the home of the nation's best, yet least pretentious, Italian restaurants. Another humble culinary tradition is the city's delicious street food like "Philly cheesesteak" hoagies, hot pretzels, chestnuts, and tomato bread. The inspired collaboration between esteemed photographer Carol M. Highsmith and writer Ted Landphair has produced and exceptional book of striking photos and insights that does justice to the city of Philadelphia and its people.Philadelphia: A Photographic Touris a superb memento for anyone who has visited this great city, and a welcome gift for anyone longing to visit the City of Brotherly Love.… (altro)

As the home of my grandmother, Philadelphia always has a special place in my heart. This is an excellent photographic memoir, combining the famous landmarks and shots of things unknown but charming and gives a nice sense of the best parts of the city. ( )
