Not for me

This is my first issue read, and for what it is, it's not badly done. For my tastes, it's got far too much interviews & essays rather than fiction. ( )

I always have trouble rating these kind of stories. So I won't. I will say I enjoyed the hell out of it!

So far only listened to:

-- “Our Talons Can Crush Galaxies” by Brooke Bolander, read by Erika Ensign - 2.5*
Super short and unfortunately the visual story doesn't translate well to audio IMO. The whole middle section is bulleted in the visual story but the audio just keeps jugging along.
I didn't really care for the story. Very choppy. (again could be audio version problems) The MC is aggressive in her story telling. I guess she has good reason to be high and mighty and talk that way to us mere mortals.

I suppose it's also a lesson piece about remembering victims. Say their names, hear their stories, not the piece of shit who did the unthinkable. Why does he even get a voice or a story? Fuck that guy.

This is an extremely satisfying short story of revenge on a cosmological and a very very tiny scale (us). :)

If only all such tales of murder and rape could ever be so delightfully wrapped up, right? Spread those wings, my goddess, spread those wings. :)

At this point, I have only read one story in this magazine: Seasons of Glass and Iron by Amal El-Mohtar.

I really enjoyed this story, especially as I love fairy tale retellings that use lesser known tales for their foundation. I recognized one of these two early on, though the other had me stumped for a little while (and I enjoyed trying to puzzle out what it was). It has some great lines in it, and some humor, but a lot of it is social commentary. It's not heavy-handed, but it is there and present. I enjoyed it all the more for calling out some of the problematic things that our fairy tales take for granted, but I know not everyone will. ( )
