This novel introduces the Errol cousins to department Z, and their personalities seem more antagonistic than they appear in later books. The novel felt rather bland for most of the first half, then moved into top gear when the real threats to the country started to appear. Unfortunately the effect was spoiled later on by a villain who appeared to be barking mad, turning high drama into weak melodrama. Not one of Creasey’s best. ( )
