L'ouvrage original d'Albert Racinet a donné lieu à de multiples et diverses éditions de qualité très inégales. Ceci sans compter sur les additifs, préface, introductions et commentaires.
Les éditions originales sont constituées de planches et documents transmis par Albert Racinet à son éditeur Firmin-Didot entre 1876 et 1888 (soit 20 livraisons dont il manque aujourd'hui les livraisons 7, 9 et 10)
Ces 20 livraisons ont donné lieu à une publication en 6 volumes chez Firmin-Didot en 1888 sous le titre "Le costume historique" ----------------------------- Cet ouvrage trilingue (grand format) paru aux éditions Taschen a fait l'objet de plusieurs éditions avec changement de titres, de formats et de mise en page selon les temps et les marchés !!! Une réédition ultérieure en format de poche est parue en 2015 pour la France sous le titre français "le Costume Historique" Une version allemande est parue sous le titre "Kostümgeschichte" (ISBN 3836559560) ...
