In the language o the region, the word "gai"means"cow"and the word"nil"means "blue" so thename nilgai means "blue cow"
In Hinduism, the cow is an important animal that has a high place in the Hindureligion. Doe to its name, the farmers of Rajasthan would get in trouble for harming the animals in the way.
