"Praise for Juan Martinez: "A little out of the ordinary.... He takes this very unnatural environment and changes it into a landscape."-Hannah Tinti "I loved it."- Etgar Keret These are the best Americans, the worst Americans. In these stories (these cities, these people) there are labyrinths, rivers, wildernesses. Voices sound slightly different than ex-pected. There's humor, but it's going to hurt. In "On Paradise," a petshop manager flies with his cat to Las Vegas to meet his long-lost mother and grandmother, only to find that the women look exactly like they did forty years before. In "The Spooky Japanese Girl is There For You," the spooky Japanese girl (a ghost) is there for you, then she is not. These refreshing and invigorating stories of displacement, exile, and identity, of men who find themselves confused by the pres-ence or absence of extraordinary women, jump up, demand to be read, and send the reader back to the earth changed: reminded from these short stories how big the world is. Juan Martinez was born in Bucaramanga, Colombia, and has lived in Orlando, Florida, and Las Vegas, Nevada. He now lives in Chicago with his wife, the writer Sarah Kokernot, and their son and two cats. He's an assistant professor at Northwestern University. His work and has appeared in Glimmer Train, McSweeney's, Ecotone, Huizache, TriQuarterly, Conjunctions, the Cossack Review, the Santa Monica Review, National Public Radio's Selected Shorts, Norton's Sudden Fiction Latino, and elsewhere"-- "These are the best Americans, the worst Americans. I found this to be an uneven collection. Several of the stories were oddly compelling, with fascinating bits of magic realism (talking plants!) or other strange touches mixed in, while other stories dragged on and on, focusing on bewildering characters trapped in an incoherent story. ( )

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. It is off the wall and different - like peeking into the mind of the author and appreciating what you see. There are 24 diverse stories and I loved the stream of consciousness writing style! ( )

I am beginning to think that this century may be the best in long time for short stories. Juan Martinez is a Colombian living in Orlando and this selection of short stories covers South American life and life in the US with the eye of an ex-pat. HIs distance from both give us as readers an unusual and perhaps unique insight into both worlds. His prose is tight but not terse and he covers the bases well ranging from very short observational pieces to longer more thoughtful stories of lives we rarely see or even hear of. One or two of these short stories are very good indeed and I look forward to hearing more from him.

I rarely pick up books of short stories, but I am very happy to have been awarded this Ebook from LibraryThing. Mr. Martinez shows a wide range of writing styles and voices that I am enjoying exploring, like one chocolate at a time! I know nothing about him but am guessing that he may be a new writer. If this collection is any indication, I predict a successful career for him and will certainly be on the lookout for more works by him. ( )

I received this book from librarything for an honest review.
I did not enjoy this book at all, it felt very disjointed and nothing really made sense. The story just skipped all over. I honestly couldn't finish it. Maybe it just wasn't my cup of tea.
