Ghost wants to be the fastest sprinter on his elite middle school track team, but his past is slowing him down in this first electrifying novel of a brand-new series from Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe Award?winning author Jason Reynolds. Ghost. Lu. Patina. Sunny. Four kids from wildly different backgrounds with personalities that are explosive when they clash. But they are also four kids chosen for an elite middle school track team?a team that could qualify them for the Junior Olympics if they can get their acts together. They all have a lot to lose, but they also have a lot to prove, not only to each other, but to themselves. Ghost has a crazy natural talent, but no formal training. If he can stay on track, literally and figuratively, he could be the best sprinter in the city. But Ghost has been running for the wrong reasons?it all starting with running away from his father, who, when Ghost was a very little boy, chased him and his mother through their apartment, then down the street, with a loaded gun, aiming to kill. Since then, Ghost has been the one causing problems?and running away from them?until he meets Coach, an ex-Olympic Medalist who blew his own shot at success by using drugs, and who is determined to keep other kids from blowing their shots at life.… (altro)

I believe “Ghost” is an excellent read for young adolescents and adults alike. The characters and story are very believable, and the narrative itself is very attention-grabbing. This story takes the reader through the difficult childhood of Castle (Ghost) Cranshaw. His father tried to kill him and his mother and ended up going to prison. He ends up participating in a track team where a coach notices his potential. I don't want to spoil the entire story; I encourage you to read it for yourself. I will definitely keep this book in my classroom library. ( )

Castle "Ghost' Cranshaw has had a rough childhood... at least, ever since his father tried to shoot him and his mother. His father went to prison for it, but ever since, he's struggled at school and around the neighborhood. His mother does her best, but she's struggling too. When he stumbles upon a track team starting their practice, he runs along with them, just for kicks. But the coach sees something in him and recruits Ghost for the team. At first, he doesn't know how to take it all, but very soon, he's feeling a sense of belonging; of being part of something. And he quickly develops a respect for Coach that he's never had for anyone.
But of course, he stumbles on his path, and one of his stumbles is a pretty big one.
Jason Reynolds never fails to deliver, and this is no exception. I'm looking forward to reading the other three books in the series. ( )

I don't usually read books about sports or books about boys actually, but this wonderful story has me ready for more of both! Though I will say I'm ready for more Jason Reynolds, just in general.
One of the things I look for as an adult reading middle grade is a voice that sounds authentically youthful. The voice of Ghost was definitely one I could imagine actually coming from a 7th grade boy, the irrational thoughts of puberty and the impulses that don't always come with sense.
Though it only skims the surface of Ghosts life, his struggles with his father and his devotion to his new found pass time, it does say 'Track, #1' so I'll reserve judgement while we wait for the next installment.
It definitely gave me a deeper appreciation for the seemingly easy sport. My indoorsy bookish self shudders at the descriptions of lengthy sweaty running practice, but it was interesting to read about a love of sports from the perspective of someone who just discovered their love of it themselves.
Ghost struggles with real issues, but the topics are handled with grace and the book is not overbearing 'about' anything. It felt refreshing and realistic without being overly simplistic or cloying. An enjoyable and quick read. ( )
