I generally like Merton's writings. However, for a fuller treatment from Merton on the Psalms, read Bread in the Wilderness. This book is kind of a rehash. ( )

A gentle and thoughtful little book that calls for the intentional use of the Psalms by layperson and the religious alike. As a Merton text, it's a great little read; as an introduction to the Psalms, there's more substantial works available. ( )

The strength of this book is the translation of the psalms that he uses - The Psalms, A Prayer Book published by the Benzinger Brothers, Inc. It is also a book of interest to diehard Merton fans. For others, there are better introductions to praying the psalms available. ( )
