They ruled Central Minnesota in sequence from 1800, when Curly Head moved his tribe of Pillager Ojibwes to Gull Lake, to 1868, when Hole-in-the Day II was assassinated. During that time: the Sioux were defeated in every attempt to take back the woodlands of Minnesota. The northern Red River Ox Cart Trail was established. The historic villages of Old Crow Wing and Old Wadena came into being. Fort Ripley was established. The location of present day Long Prairie became the largest population center in Minnesota with the establishment of the Winnebago Reservation. The first road in Minnesota was built, connecting Fort Snelling and the village of Crow Wing. The second road in Minnesota connected this road with Long Prairie. The Crow Wing River and its tributaries became the second area logged in Minnesota. The first Christian missionary efforts in Minnesota began here, but the Pillager Ojibwe burned down the churches on Gull Lake and Mission Lake, and Hole-in-the-Day the Younger threatened to annihilate the Whites in the area at the same time as Chief Little Crow was leading the Sioux uprising in southern Minnesota. When Chief Curly Head took over Central Minnesota in 1800, the only whites in the area were transient traders. In 1868, when Hole-in-the-Day II was assassinated, the Civil War was over, many white settlers were moving in and the Gull Lake-Mississippi-Crow Wing Ojibwe were being moved to the new White Earth reservation. - Back cover.… (altro)
