This is a beautiful coming of age story, that emphasizes the importance of your roots. A young Clara, who knows very little about her father's past or family gets the opportunity to visit her grandparents in rural mexico. The alternating between the grandmothers experiences and Clara's provide a great universal journey of self discovery. This story is extremely good at emphasizing the importance of knowing your heritage in developing your self identity. My daughter, 15, loves a good book. When she read this one last year she said this one was the best stories she had ever read and that I "have to read this one!" I did, and found it to be a well-written (beautiful symbolism and metaphor), entertaining, adventurous, and tender coming of age story of a girl who's world opens up widely when she finds out what it means to discover her true self and to be true to herself. I loved it! nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione

Fourteen-year-old Clara Luna spends the summer with her grandparents in the tiny, remote village of Yucuyoo, Mexico, learning about her grandmother's life as a healer, her father's decision to leave home for the United States, and her own place in the world. Content warning for younger readers: A secondary character is raped but no description of it, just before and after. Also some abuse, adultery, and a forced marriage. Again, not very descriptive but for the content might be too much for younger readers. I was expecting a book for middle school readers but probably better for older readers. ( )
