Trapped in the 5th circle of university hell, flat broke, then the bodies start piling up. I should have sensed something wrong when my mortician sister offered me a job. And I should have known something was up when she talked me into taking those pills. At the very least, the hallucinations should have been a red flag. But now, here I am, standing over a half-eaten corpse. I can't believe I didn't see this coming. Noted humorist and Cracked and BuzzFeed contributor Luke T. Harrington presents his first novel, Ophelia, Alive, a thrillingly original horror opus of murder, drug addiction, Freudian psychobabble, and existential jeremiads. Crammed full of experimental prose, tenuous allusions to zombie movies, copious quotes from Shakespeare and Poe, and a bunch of weird stuff about sex and religion that will probably make you really uncomfortable, Ophelia, Alive is like nothing you've ever read before. Unless you've read Hamlet. It's actually a lot like Hamlet.… (altro)

A dream of a book, full of lost bits of time strung together by moments of sanity, told in a drugged haze. Oh, wait, that describes Ophelia as well as the book. So be it. Good reading. ( )

First person coming of age with drugs, a little too much stream-of-consciousness and not enough limericks. There are never enough limericks. ARC received from Early Reviewers. ( )

Vivid imagery and steadily building suspense make Luke T. Harrington’s Ophelia, ALIVE a good choice for fans of psychological thrillers. That is not my usually preferred genre so the fact that it kept me from putting it aside should also be a recommendation.

This was also my best example yet of some differences between a traditional print book and an eBook. Ophelia, the main character, loses track of time continually, while the reader has the advantage of date and time “chapter headings”. For this reader, being able to flip pages physically would have been more convenient. What led me to request this title from LibraryThing’s Early Reviewers list (where I received it for free) were the phrases “noted humorist” and “a lot like Hamlet”, as well as the somewhat quirky style of the plot description; somehow I ignored the “horror opus” note. Had I picked up a print copy of the book while browsing, I probably would not have chosen to read it. None of this will prevent me from recommending it however. ( )

I was a little disappointed with “Ophelia, Alive” and was not what I was expecting. What seemed as a good story of how Ophelia was part of an experiment, turned out to be a difficult read for me. I thought the writing was good, however the overall flow of the story was discombobulated in thought. It felt to me as though ideas were put on paper and yet never organized or resolved. Maybe that was the intent of the author to demonstrate the effects of drugs and how a young adult interprets life, but there were some parts left unfinished. This was an interesting plot and I think I would have enjoyed the book more if I took the time to read slowly. My suggestion: read slowly. ( )
