David Howard has been living on the streets of New York City so long he can barely remember his parents. Through the Children's Aid Society, he finds a new home with the Bauer family in Missouri. But farm life isn't easy, especially for a boy who's never seen a cow before.

David is an orphan street boy who was befriended with an older African American boy, Mickey. Mickey has been taking care of David but one day when David was eleven, Mickey recognized how thin and pale David was he decided to send David West so that David will have a family and be better fed. David left his friend and came to Missouri to stayed with the Bauer, a farmer's family. At the Bauer's family, David felt lonely and miss his chum Mickey; he also had to work hard in the farm in exchange for his daily meals. He befriended with Amos, a former slave. However, not too long after, Amos had to leave because of the unexpected danger threat. David was again left alone, but every time he looked to the sky and see the stars, he was consoled that his two friends also saw the same stars. ( )
