This book is about a little boy named Jamal, who wanted to know if his grandma was ever a baby. His grandma told him that she was once a baby on the way, and told him the story of how she was born. In the story, her sister told their Aunt Nanny to come deliver the baby, and her 9 older siblings all waited with her daddy until she was born. Jamal then asks if anyone will ever ask HIM if he was a baby, and his grandma tells him the story of how he was born so that he could tell it when he was a grandpa. Throughout the story, I loved how to illustrations switched from the present to the past. I thought that was really cool, and it could lead to a good discussion with children as to why the illustrator did that.
At the end of the story the grandmother told the little boy that he has a story of how he was born too, and that he could pass that story on to his grandchildren when he gets older. I think this story also shows that stories can be passed down from generation to generation, and it is all interesting to hear because no two birth stories are alike. ( )
