A story of five extraordinary sisters with supernatural abilities working in New Hampshire with newly discovered granite. One of the sisters was such a great stonecutter that she was able to make a real-live baby out of granite. None of them know how to care for a baby however and the story shows all the silly things they try to make him happy. A little girl from the valley comes to them and offers her help and saves the entire state from his loud crying by soothing him with things a baby needs. The story is very silly but entertaining. This book is about five giants siters that have special abilities, such as, being able to twista river like a rag, whittling wood, and carving anything out of granite mountains. One day they carve a real live baby out of granite and they instantly love it. But they baby will not stop crying for most of the book because they are so large and the baby is only the size of one of their nails. At the end the baby is given to a normal sized girl and shared with the giant sisters and her. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione

This picture book would be a nice addition to a unit on New Hampshire folklore. It also would work well in a New England study of folk tales. It could have a place in a class studying folk tales in general. It would be interesting to investigate whether or not the five sisters in the book actually have a place in New Hampshire folklore in the Granite Mountains. ( )
