Weaving together personal stories, history, and analysis, Same Family, Different Colors explores the myriad ways skin-color politics affect family dynamics in the United States. Colorism and color bias-the preference for or presumed superiority of people based on the color of their skin-is a pervasive and damaging but rarely openly discussed phenomenon. In this unprecedented book, Lori L. Tharps explores the issue in African American, Latino, Asian American, and mixed-race families and communities by weaving together personal stories, history, and analysis. The result is a compelling portrait of the myriad ways skin-color politics affect family dynamics in the United States. Tharps, the mother of three mixed-race children with three distinct skin colors, uses her own family as a starting point to investigate how skin-color difference is dealt with. Her journey takes her across the country and into the lives of dozens of diverse individuals, all of whom have grappled with skin-color politics and speak candidly about experiences that sometimes scarred them. From a Latina woman who was told she couldn't be in her best friend's wedding photos because her dark skin would "spoil" the pictures, to a light-skinned African American man who spent his entire childhood "trying to be Black," Tharps illuminates the complex and multifaceted ways that colorism affects our self-esteem and shapes our lives and relationships. Along with intimate and revealing stories, Tharps adds a historical overview and a contemporary cultural critique to contextualize how various communities and individuals navigate skin-color politics. Groundbreaking and urgent, Same Family, Different Colors is a solution-seeking journey to the heart of identity politics, so that this more subtle "cousin to racism," in the author's words, will be exposed and confronted. (For Early Reviewers)
Tharpe's book focuses on the sensitive issue of intraracial skin color. Families talk frankly and honestly about their skin color and how if affected their personal and professional relationships. Still a sensitive issue today and in the future. Tharpe's book at least begins the conversation. ( )

Well written book about colorism within interracial families and how it affects each member. I hadn't ever really considered this subtle racism before. ( )

I couldn't finish reading it. While I am a Caucasian I am very much interested in diversity and inclusion, which is why I wanted to read this book. The concept of colorism adds an interesting dynamic to an already complicated topic. However, this reader was quickly put off and I could never connect with the author. Her writing ability is excellent and I appreciate the skill she demonstrates, but she fails to deliver the message I was expecting. Additionally, while the stories were excellently conveyed and heart wrenching, they were all from the point of view of the subject. I would have appreciated something more than the person's belief that the reason they were slighted was because of their skin tone. I concluded that the author was just as biased as those she was criticizing. Perhaps I would have gotten more from it had I finished the book, but the author simply failed the engage this reader. ( )

Tharps explores issues of color and race with compassion and insight in her book 'Same Family, Different Colors'. She interviews people about how colorism, privileging lighter skin tones over darker skin tones, plays out in mixed race families where there are different skin tones, and she explores the way that skin tone is separate from and linked to our views on race. Tharp's interviews highlight how some families tackle colorism head on or refuse to acknowledge it, how that is separate and connected to tackling racism, and how both strategies can succeed or fail depending on the larger culture that people experience outside their homes. She concludes that more than wanting to be any particular color, people want to belong and feel like a part of their tribe.

This book examines how colorist affects families, specifically families in which embers have different skin tones, but identify as members of the same racial and ethnic groups. Tharps examines black, Asian, and Latino families. Her evidence is narrative; she uses interviews to find out how colorist has affected various family members. While there has certainly been a pervasive and insidious history of "whiter is better" sentiments in the United States, Tharps finds that the dynamics of colorism are more complicated than that. Some people feel their skin isn't dark enough, some regret that they do not match their family members. Tharps finds that the feelings created by colorism can put definite stress on family relationships, as well as on individuals' self-perception. For example, some of Tharps's subjects have been told that they don't really belong to their race because their skin color is not "correct."

These are difficult issues to address as the impulses involved are sometimes unconscious, and are deeply woven into the fabric of society. The impulses are also sometimes well-meaning. For example, parents may extensively praise a daughters' looks because they fear the social constructs surrounding her skin color may make her feel ugly.

Overall, this is a very thorough look at how an issue can have profound effects on individuals and families. Personally I had been hoping for a bit more discussion of the academic literature on colorism. The author is an academic, after all. I do recognize that this book is intended for a broader audience, this is more a matter of my personal interest. ( )
