This review is for the CD recording of two Arthur Miller plays, Death of a Salesman and The Crucible. After listening to these performances, my conclusion is that dramatic performances are not well suited to the audiobook format, especially if you are intent on listening in your car. The dynamic range of the spoken lines are so great that in order to hear the usually key and dramatic softly spoken lines, you risk being deafened by the responding character's voice. I've not had that problem with narrative works, where the voice is essentially at the same volume throughout the reading. It's a little like the difference in listening to classical music in your car versus jazz or pop. Of course, these two plays go to the core of the American experience; in the first, to the despair involved when one finally realizes that the dreams of success and accomplishment are simply not in the cards, and, in the second, to the courage and self-respect man is forced to rely on in the face of government and religion run amok. I've given two stars to the recording itself, not to the play or to the acting. I love the plays, and the acting is great, but I feel that listeners should be warned of the difficulties they will encounter with the dynamic range problem. Note also that the recording of The Crucible seems to have been missing a scene at the beginning of Act IV. Also, my copy of the recording suffered from a recording problem that made it unlistenable. I was lucky to have a text version of the play so that I could finish the most dramatic portion of the work. ( ) nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione
Presents two of the dramatist's most influential plays. Death of a salesman is the tragedy of a man who gave his life, or sold it, in pursuit of the American Dream. The crucible addresses the mass hysteria of alleged witchcraft in Salem, Massachusetts during the Colonial period. Non sono state trovate descrizioni di biblioteche |
