Faraway Fox shows the burden and stress we, as over-consumers, put on helpless animals, and it does it in an effortless and subtle way. It shows a fox who misses his family because he keeps getting separated by things being built by humans, luckily he finds his way in the end back home but who's to say that there aren't millions of animals that never find their way back home? Powerful message in such a small picture book. ( )

The idea of a bridge or tunnel for animals will engage children's natural empathy for animals. Read aloud, pair with video from People's Way Wildlife Crossings, and have kids construct a wildlife bridge or tunnel with Legos or blocks and miniature toy animals for a STEM activity. I brought large sheets of paper to my summer camp outreach for kids to design and draw a crossing.
