A book about archers, that was actually written by an archer with practical experience of the art. Thus, a fine brief look at the major weapon system. It has nice pictures, and some useful diagrams. Well worth the money. ( ) This entry from the Osprey Warrior series does exactly what it should do. Author Clive Bartlett provides an overview of the longbowmen and then adds information about longbow tactics, dress, the nature of the weapon, how they lived on campaign, and host of interesting tidbits. The plates, by Gerry Embleton trace the appearance of the longbowman over almost 200 years, from 1330-1514. As with many of the Warrior volumes there are a couple of great plates showing archer accoutrments. I'd wish there were more plates from the Hundred Years war, but that's where my interests lie. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione

This book is identical in content and price only the cover differs. The English military ascendancy which lasted from the mid-14th to the early 15th century was founded upon defensive tactics based on the use of the longbow. This weapon, distinctive in that it was used by English forces alone, was probably the most effective missile weapon of the Late Middle Ages- its arrow had the same penetrative ability as a modern day bullet and the bow's rate of fire was not equalled by any weapon used by English forces until the adoption of the Lee Enfield rifle at the beginning of the 20th century.
