The Spanish Inquisition was a court; it was first empowered in the 13th century by the Roman Catholic Church to force everyone in its vast area of influence to adopt its beliefs & doctrines. The authorities in Spain believed that the greatest good for man was the strengthening of Christianity by the destruction of Jews, heretics & infidels. Jews had to become Christians or leave the country. Many became converses (converts) to avoid punishment. Those who chose not to leave Spain were subjected to the horrors of the Inquisition.
