A travelogue of parallel journeys: that of Francis of Assisi on his way to sainthood in the thirteenth century, and that of author Francke, who followed his path through the beauty of central and coastal Italy, and on to Egypt. She and her husband, Harvey Loomis, used medieval texts as their guidebooks. Theirs was not a spiritual journey but one based on admiration for a man whose legend continues to inspire and fascinate millions around the world. From Assisi--a small Umbrian town now second only to Rome as an Italian pilgrimage destination--Saint Francis crisscrossed Italy for twenty years. So too does the author travel through the "green heart" of Italy to hill towns and cities and to the many Franciscan sanctuaries. Along the way, Francke draws us into the splendid beauty of the landscape that inspired the saint's love for nature and regard for all living things.--From publisher description.… (altro)

Francke writes a biography of Francis by traveling and following in his footsteps. It works well in that when Francis' story begins to pall, the contemporary travel aspect of the book kicks in. The biographical aspect of the book suffers a bit from Francke's apparent true believer syndrome. She seems to believingly and uncritically gulp the tales of Francis' miracles. More importantly, one suspects that his crowning touch of Christ's stigmata likely were self-inflicted. No doubt Francis was a great man and for the most part a good man, even if the myths and miracles surrounding him were bogus, as likely they were. History is full of visionaries who claim to channel voices; they may be mental cases, but if they do more good than harm ... . ( )

Francke traveled the path that Francis took during his years as a monk. The premise of the book was promising, but Francke's retelling lacks spirit. Although she said she did not want to repeat his biography (which she admits has been done enough), it was the biogrphical details that stand out. Nick & Cathy gave the book for Christmas 2005. The inscription reads: "Sue, We will always remember our time in Italy together & the amazing town of Assisi. Love, Nick & Cathy" ( )
