Throughout this book, I was so happy to see the illustrations of my family members. The illustrator did a great job at making them look very realistic. I was able to connect with this book in many ways. Often, the band would "strike up" to honor the dead or celebrate just about anything. The jazz of our street makes us move our feet. So evert time you hear the band, you cant do anything but join them and dance. ( )

I really enjoyed this picture book about the Treme neighborhood. As soon as I saw the illustration of the men with their instruments, I knew the children were going to a second line parade. The second line parade is filled with everyone from the neighborhood and gives a sense of community. Children growing up with these community traditions have a uniqueness to their childhood memories and I thought was a great book to introduce that uniqueness New Orleans provides to other children not lucky enough to live here. This story is about the traditions we have in New Orleans and the parades that we have as a tradition. We have parades to celebrate the good times and even the bad times we dance around the city to the sounds of the band. Since I live in New Orleans the illustration felt like I was dancing with them in the City ( )

You can tell this book was written about New Orleans through the illustrations and the wording. Everything is described using imagery and sounds. The two fold pages are completed with one side being the text, and the opposite side a full ink page. The Jazz of Our Street is about a girl and her brother, but then describes a long lived tradition in New Orleans, especially the Treme. Through the sounds and visions described, the reader can feel as if he or she is partaking in the activity of a second line. This book teaches that a second line in New Orleans is not just for sadness, but also for rejoicing. ( )
