I read for mystery and family saga and what I got was a romance with plenty of sex scenes and characters that were comical in their proclivities. I am human enough to read a love story or even a mills and boon romance but this really takes weird to new frontiers. The sex scenes were over the top. There were some gem descriptions and pieces of dialogue that made my eyes roll right to the back of my head. I do not find them worthy of repeating here. It is like an x-rated version of the young and the restless. It is no coincidence that this soapie of the 1980s that was mentioned at least twice in the story. It was an audiobook and I managed to finish it. Phew. 3.75 stars. A dark Southern gothic thriller about the Maddox family, owners of Red Thread bourbon. As a young lady seeks to steal a rare, remaining bottle from a wealthy bar owner, she tells him the story of why the bottle is rightfully hers: a twisted tale of many dark family secrets. Tamara Maddox flees her family home, after a battle with her mother and grandfather over her libido in respect of the horse groomer, Levi. Hoping to thwart her mother's sale of the family business, Tamara and Levi reunite, and flee to her father's island getaway. Suspenseful, but Reisz's forte in erotica was a bit over the top for this story in my opinion. Yeah. I can read a book. Want to know what happens next. Appreciate the author's work... But really not like what she writes. My life isn't better for this story other than an hour entertainment and the possible ability to barf a little. (That's not positive is it?) I liked the final redemption. And that is all. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione
Betrayal, revenge and a family scandal that bore a 150-year-old mystery. When Cooper McQueen wakes up from a night with a beautiful stranger, it's to discover he's been robbed. The only item stolen--a million-dollar bottle of bourbon. The thief, a mysterious woman named Paris, claims the bottle is rightfully hers. After all, the label itself says it's property of the Maddox family who owned and operated Red Thread Bourbon distillery since the last days of the Civil War, until the company went out of business for reasons no one knows... no one except Paris. In the small hours of a Louisville morning, Paris unspools the lurid tale of the Maddox family and Tamara, heiress to the distillery that became an empire. Theirs is a legacy of wealth and power, but also of lies, secrets and sins of omission. Why Paris wants the bottle of Red Thread remains a secret until the truth of her identity is at last revealed, and the century-old vengeance Tamara vowed against her family can finally be completed. I definitely liked it, I was glad it was mostly Tamara's story, I cared about her and Levi much more than about Cooper and Paris. The middle parts of the frame story, where we're just dropping out to hear Cooper react, are the weakest parts I thought. Otherwise, it was solid and enjoyable. ( )
