The plot itself is pretty straightforward as Derek and Kate's adopted daughter, Julie, investigate a brutal home invasion and the theft of a rock with apparent magical properties. The actual investigation is action-packed with some intense moments as Derek deals not only with external threats, but with his internal demons as well. The most intriguing elements, however, are those that make this novella essential to the ongoing story arc as some important details are provided alongside hints of things to come. Overall, a well-written and enticing prologue to Derek and Julie's eventual spin-off series (one can hope!). This was kind of okay. It has some interesting information about what Julie and Derek have been up to, and drops a few hints about the future. But I had a very hard time reading this, and ended up buying the audiobook so that I could finish it. (
