La película de 1946 contó con Lana Turner, John Garfield, Cecil Kellaway, Hume Cronyn, Leon Ames y Audrey Totter en los personajes principales. Fue dirigida por Tay Garnett, y escribieron el guion George Bassman y Erich Zeisl. El cartero siempre llama dos veces' es la historia de Frank Chambers, un "sintecho" que encuentra trabajo en un bar de carretera. Desde el primer día que comienza a trabajar, Frank se enamora perdidamente de la mujer del jefe. Se obsesiona con ella y, desde el primer momento que la conoce, Frank solo tendrá un objetivo: que la mujer sea solo y exclusivamente suya.
