This is an essential resource for teaching a child with cognitive disability. It is practical, realistic, and tested. Dieses Buch ist wichtig! Für Menschen mit Down-Syndrom können schon die allereinfachsten Lesefertigkeiten einen Schritt hin zu einer fruchtbaren Beschäftigung und zur persönlichen Unabhängigkeit bedeuten. Man nahm früher an, daß Kinder mit Down-Syndrom oder anderen geistigen Behinderungen solche intellektuellen Fähigkeiten wie Lesen gar nicht lernen könnten, weil sie nicht lernmotiviert wären. Man nahm auch an, daß man jemanden nicht motivieren könnte, der keine "intrinsische“ -innere - Motivation besitzt. Aus dieser Annahme, daß ein Motivationsdefizit einfach eine der nicht "heilbaren" Begleiterscheinungen einer geistigen Behinderung sei, schloß man logisch, daß jeder Versuch, Kinder mit Down-Syndrom das Lesen zu lehren, zum Scheitern verurteilt sein müsse.
