"When an eleven year old James Renner fell in love with Amy Mihaljevic, the missing girl seen on posters all over his neighborhood, it was the beginning of a lifelong obsession with true crime. That obsession leads James to a successful career as an investigative journalist. It also gave him PTSD. In 2011, James began researching the strange disappearance of Maura Murray, a UMass student who went missing after wrecking her car in rural New Hampshire in 2004. Over the course of his investigation, he uncovers numerous important and shocking new clues about what may have happened to Maura, but also finds himself in increasingly dangerous situations with little regard for his own well-being. As his quest to find Maura deepens, the case starts taking a toll on his personal life, which begins to spiral out of control. The result is an absorbing dual investigation of the complicated story of the All-American girl who went missing and James's own equally complicated true crime addiction. James Renner's True Crime Addict is the story of his spellbinding investigation of the missing person's case of Maura Murray, which has taken on a life of its own for armchair sleuths across the web. In the spirit of David Fincher's Zodiac, it is a fascinating look at a case that has eluded authorities and one man's obsessive quest for the answers"--… (altro)

I really enjoyed the half true crime/half memoir aspect of this book ( )

What satisfaction can be had reading a story for which you know there is no ending? It’s the question I asked myself going in to True Crime Addict, James Renner’s account of his investigation into the Maura Murray disappearance; a yet unsolved mystery.

I’ll start with how I come to buy a book. It lands in front of me any number of ways (Goodreads, ads, articles, Amazon), and I read the blurb. If that sounds like it’s for me, I read the first few pages. If I like the style and flow, I purchase. Not everyone can hook me on voice alone, but this author did. And he strung me along with an honest, no-holds-barred account of his findings, inserting a dash of personal history here and there to support why it is he’s so crime-obsessed.

A fellow crime fanatic, James’s story resonated with me.

As for the case, his theories seem as plausible as any (or at least supported by facts as he received them from numerous sources close to Maura Murray). I didn’t know a thing about this disappearance before reading True Crime Addict so I can’t say if this is new or old material, but it’s an interesting introduction.

Overall, an excellent book for the true crime fan. While I won’t say Maura’s is the most salacious case, the author presents it in such a way that I couldn’t put the book down. Five stars!

A different type of true crime book, but interesting. Can't say I like the author ...but easy to read and the disappearance of Maura Murray is a true mystery with so many unanswered questions. ( )

It’s more a personal story of intergenerational trauma and some recovery than a traditional true crime book. If you want a book where the missing person is found or the bad guy is brought to justice or the mystery is solved, this is not that book. ( )

This is not a run of the mill "true crime" book. It reads like biography, it reads like fiction. Fast paced, clever and compelling. Renner's journalism background shines, as does his ability to structure a story. There are some ghastly personal stories interwoven with the very strange Maura Murray case but it never goes into the realm of gruesome the way some true crime books do. I'd like to hire James Renner to teach me to write like this, but I suspect his brand of obsession can't really be taught. ( )
