"Amelia Sachs is hot on the trail of a killer. She's chasing him through a department store in Brooklyn when an escalator malfunctions. The stairs give way, with one man horribly mangled by the gears. Sachs is forced to let her quarry escape as she jumps in to try to help save the victim. She and famed forensic detective Lincoln Rhyme soon learn, however, that the incident may not be an accident at all, but the first in a series of intentional attacks. They find themselves up against one of their most formidable opponents ever: a brilliant killer who turns common products into murder weapons. As the body count threatens to grow, Sachs and Rhyme must race against the clock to unmask his identity--and discover his mission--before more people die."--… (altro)

A better than average Lincoln Rhyme, Amelia Sach detective thriller.
A tall skinny multiple hamburger eating misfit. Teams up with a physicaly and mentally scarred woman who lost her husband when their car failed due to a electronic switch which wasn't updated.
The two detectives are at wits end to find out why mechanical devices are becoming lethal devices. Failure to update electronic switches which have a embedded device for this purpose is the cause.
This is the root of the story, companies try to avoid doing the updates and legal responsibility by issuing the patches but it's up to the consumer to install them.
There is an unexpected twist in the end but I think the book went on to long. ( )

Excellent as always, three stories interwoven. ( )

It's been a while since I read a Lincoln Rhyme book; I have actually missed reading the two previous books in the series. But nerveless, it felt really good to return to this series since I like the main characters so much. There is some friction between Amelia and Lincoln in this book. She is upset that he has quit the force to work as a teacher, and she also has some personal problems with her mother being ill. Lincoln has taken on a Juliette Archer as an intern, and I was a bit worried Deaver was setting up this to be some kind of love-triangle. And, then Nick Carelli, Amelia ex-boyfriend showed up in the story, and I was really worried this would turn into a love drama. But I needed not worry. THE STEEL KISS is a Deaver book, and he know what he is doing.

READ THE REST OF THE REVIEW OVER AT FRESH FICTION! ( )

I wasn’t a fan of escalators before this book! Now….

Unfortunately, the part of the book about the escalator was pretty boring. As was the plot line with Nick. Actually, Ron’s story was boring too. Ditto for the new character, Rhyme’s intern. The other main storyline, about the killer with the ball-peen hammer, good for cracking skulls, was much more interesting! And I also dislike the rampant consumerism that exists today. The Shopper. This killer also hacks into home and workplace appliances, cars, and devices, into their smart systems, to hurt his victims. Turning them into weapons against their owners. He calls himself, The People’s Guardian.

Overall, this wasn't the best book in this series. Like I wrote, I really only enjoyed the story about the killer with the hammer and the hacking. All the rest was pretty dull, for me. But after twelve books, and a few short stories, I'm still a fan. I just probably won't re-read this one. ( )
