"One of the first great events in Christian history was the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD, convened to organize Christian sects and beliefs into a unified doctrine. The great Christian clergymen who wrote before this famous event are referred to as the Ante-Nicenes and the Apostolic Fathers, and their writings are collected here in a ten-volume set. The Ante-Nicenes lived so close to the time of Christ that their interpretations of the New Testament are considered more authentic than modern voices. But they are also real and flawed men, who are more like their fellow Christians than they are like the Apostles, making their words echo in the ears of spiritual seekers. In Volume I of the 10-volume collected works of the Ante-Nicenes first published between 1885 and 1896, readers will find the writings of: Clement of Rome, the fourth pope, who was supposedly martyred by being tied to an anchor and tossed overboard Mathetes, an anonymous writer considered the first Christian apologist Polycarp, a Christian bishop who was stabbed to death after he failed to burn at the stake Ignatius, a student of John the Apostle, who was Bishop of Antioch before he was killed Barnabas, an anonymous writer given the name of Saint Barnabas Papias, author of Interpretations of the Sayings of the Lord, a textbook on quotes from Jesus Justin Martyr, a Christian apologist and accomplished philosopher, and Irenaeus, disciple of Polycarp, apologist, and bishop of Lugdunum."… (altro)

Provides a look into what 2nd century believers in Jesus Christ believed about this new "religion". This volume 1 of early church writings covers the Apostolic Fathers, Justin, and Ireneaus. I bought the collection of the Church Fathers (38 vols., see: http://www.christianbook.com/the-early-church-fathers-38-volumes/9781565630819/p......) in order to confirm the validity of the Calvinist claim that the early church taught what is today known as Calvinism; however, upon reading it, and although I cannot agree with everything here presented in vol. 1, it is very clear they did not espouse Calvinism at all. In any case, it was an excellent read into the mind of the early church to discover how they were influenced by the apostolic teachings - in particular, the Hebrew Bible and whatever texts of the NT were available to them in written form at that time - and to get a glimpse of some of the theological controversies, methods of defenses, and problems encountered in and outside the Church, and how these early church leaders addressed the issues of their time. Of course, it is what it is -- the writings of the Apostolic Fathers + Ss. Justin Martyr & Irenaeus of Lyons -- which, of course, I give five big shining stars. I give four here though because I could have done without the constant Protestant self-justification in the footnotes and sometimes even in the translation itself. Oh well. It was a great read. ( )

Great historical resource on early Christianity, text-centric though.
