Cuando el lujoso Tren Azul llega a Niza, un guardia intenta despertar a Ruth Kettering para anunciarle su parada. Effettivamente è un romanzo deboluccio che nonostante la presenza di Poirot non riesce a trovare una sua dimensione, forse perché mescola troppi generi: il risultato è un giallo poco avvincente ed un thriller che manca di credibilità; d'altronde la Christie non ha mai reso al meglio quando si è allontanata dalla formula vincente del cozy mystery per avventurarsi sui sentieri del crime o della spy story.
La rosa dei sospetti è veramente scarna e per una volta non sarà difficile indovinare il colpevole, non fosse altro che per esclusione. Tutta la questione del furto di gioielli e del famigerato Marchese poi è molto artefatta e sembra quasi una stonatura, un tuffo nel sensazionalismo che non ci aspetteremmo dalla regina del giallo all'inglese, fatto di tenute di campagna e té delle cinque. Infine l'ambientazione potenzialmente molto suggestiva del treno è sfruttata poco e male, per fortuna sei anni dopo si rifarà con quel capolavoro inimitabile che è Assassinio sull'Orient Express.
Naturalmente Dame Agatha sa scrivere quindi il libro è confezionato a puntino ed è piacevole da leggere, ma resta la delusione di una prestazione poco più che sufficiente di un'autrice da cui siamo abituati ad aspettarci capolavori. ( )
