I knew about Ramadan before hand but have not heard many stories about it. It was really fun to see her journey and to see the adults in her life support her through it! This book is for primary age to intermediate level students (depending on use in the classroom). This book outlines the struggles of a young Muslim girl to share her participation in Ramadan with the rest of her class; despite being proud of her culture's traditions, young Lailah somehow can't find the courage to share this part of her life with her class until she meets a friendly voice that encourages her to explain her traditions to her classmates. This book touches on subjects such as religion that may not be a prevalent topic in the classroom. It is a valuable resource for teachers to use to possibly teach about different religions, and have a discussion about the differences between students. This book goes to validate and represent a diversity of thought, and is a very relevant story to the experiences of children of a minority background, especially regarding religion. From the perspective of an elementary student named Lailah who is celebrating the Ramadan story by fasting, but the act of fasting at school was difficult in the United States as her peers are worried about missing her lunch and thinking she will be hungry. I would use this story for grades 4th-5th as a great story of empathy, but also for an introduction to the cultures present in the United States and different traditions that can be present within our own classroom. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione

Now that she is ten, Lailah is delighted that she can fast during the month of Ramadan like her family and her friends in Abu Dhabi, but finding a way to explain to her teacher and classmates in Atlanta is a challenge until she gets some good advice from the librarian, Mrs. Scrabble.
