During this time the enfolding of Spirit, its peace and presence slowly fade from his life. In midlife, upon his adoptive father's death, he returns to the cabin of his childhood and discovers a series of letters written by his great-grandfather, Minominike. His religious education and worldview is challenged by the unconditional love and truth expressed in these letters. As he reads the words of this old man's life his heart is returned to a time of embrace and spiritual oneness that he has not known in decades. Feeling the wind of the Spirit and sensing the inner whisper of a still small voice, meaning and love are again awakened in his heart. We travel with him on a path of revelation opening his heart to the unity and benevolence surrounding us all. This is a novel that pierces the core of humanity's longing for inner peace and opens for us the simple joy of being. Written as a series of letters from an Ojibwe elder to his adopted grandson Tulugaq Kagagi alternating with chapters where the (now adult) grandson reveals the memories and feelings the newly discovered letters bring up. It feels like this is a factual tale, yet looking at the dates it is obvious that the author is not the same person as Tulugaq Kagagi. I'm sorry I missed the author talk at my local library--I'll have to find some other opportunity to find out how he came to write this book and why he set it in this manner. There is such a wide diversity of endorsements/blurbers, from Native people as well as whites involved in religious ministry, that I feel there must be some factual basis, perhaps some actual letters received by someone else. The website for the book (theteacherwithin.com) does show images of handwritten letters. I had a hard time deciding how to rate this book. On the one hand, I found many truths in the letters. In my reading, I usually make note of phrases that particularly speak to my heart but in this book I eventually gave it up because there were so many. I'll just have to buy a copy. On the other hand, I kept falling asleep. I think it was because I needed a break to absorb all that I was reading, so it is hard to downrate the book based on that, altho I also may have felt sleepy because of the strain of reading the script font in the letter sections. It is a large font, so is not really an eye strain, just different for my brain to process. I also was irritated by the occasional mention of Jesus (Geezus), as if spiritual truths aren't valid without reference to him. But I do have to accept that missionary influence was a part of the era being written about. ( )

I had a hard time deciding how to rate this book.
On the one hand, I found many truths in the letters. In my reading, I usually make note of phrases that particularly speak to my heart but in this book I eventually gave it up because there were so many. I'll just have to buy a copy.
