Increasing numbers of parents grapple with children who are acting out without obvious reason. Revved up and irritable, many of these children are diagnosed with ADHD, bipolar illness, autism, or other disorders but don't respond well to treatment. They are then medicated, often with poor results and unwanted side effects. Based on emerging scientific research and extensive clinical experience, integrative child psychiatrist Dr. Victoria Dunckley has pioneered a four-week program to treat the frequent underlying cause, Electronic Screen Syndrome (ESS). Dr. Dunckley has found that everyday use of interactive screen devices-such as computers, video games, smartphones, and tablets-can easily overstimulate a child's nervous system, triggering a variety of stubborn symptoms. In contrast, she's discovered that a strict electronic fast single-handedly improves mood, focus, sleep, and behavior, regardless of the child's diagnosis. Offered now in this book, this simple intervention can produce a life-changing shift in brain function-all without cost or medication. Dr. Dunckley provides hope for parents who feel that their child has been misdiagnosed or inappropriately medicated, by presenting an alternative explanation for their child's difficulties and a concrete plan for treating them.… (altro)

E. is 1. Several times she has gotten ahold of charging electronics. Her tantrums when we remove them from her(even though she hasn't played a single thing---only succeeded in locking us out for 15 minutes) are noticeably longer than when we take away food, or a book, or (her current fave) a paper towel.

The book was repetitive and, thus, easily skimmable. But the info was interesting the first time. And, as she says, what have you got to lose? Try it out and prove her wrong. I probably will soon. ( )

I actually finished this book last month but waited to post a review until we’ve completed the month. Reset Your Child’s Brain by Victoria Dunckley MD. It took me a few days to get through the bulk of the book and I took notes. I know my kids needed a device intervention. I was skeptical at first since the blurb on the back sort of sounds like it’s the cure for ADHD and Autism, but it actually addresses kids with neurological challenges separately and does not attempt to cure these conditions. The author is knowledgeable and the book is thoroughly researched and cited.
My kids have been on a devices fast for 3 weeks uninterrupted and only had a couple hours the previous week. This included spring break. 😳 My house looks like FEMA should qualify it as a disaster area because my kids played with their toys for the first time in months. They played cooperatively, used imagination and entertained themselves. It didn’t stop the fighting or the whining, and they complained every day about not having devices. They start tomorrow with limited access in moderation. It wasn’t a magical cure-all for homework battles or tantrums but there was some improvement. I hope we can maintain moderation and not get back to the meltdowns and rages that used to follow any sort of control of the devices. With reading for anyone with kids who have issues with giving up gadgets.
