EducatingParents.org rating: Approved In my opinion, this is a great informational text about Antarctica that is appropriately written for children. The book is composed of diary entries written by a boy who voyaged to Antarctica. It is written in the boy’s point of view and depicts the actual events that he experienced on his journey to the southernmost tip of the world. There is a useful map of Antarctica located in the beginning of the book; viewers can examine this map and point out the locations of where this boy traveled. His personal photographs of the ice glaciers, animal life, scenery, and research bases are spread throughout the story. I really enjoyed viewing these photographs, especially the many pictures of penguins. Most of the photographs provide useful captions that explain what the pictures describe. For example, the caption for the photograph of a penguin sliding on its belly reads, “Tobogganing is a fast way for penguins to travel through the snow.” While reading about this boy’s incredible voyage, the reader is also learning so many accurate facts about Antarctica and it’s wildlife. One fact mentioned in the book is, “When a whale spouts, it breathes out the warm air in its lungs through its blowhole.” I really like how the accurate facts and information are presented from a child’s perspective and are written in child-friendly terms. There was so much suspense included in this boy’s diary entries, such as the storms and rough waves, crewmembers falling in the icy water, and the dangers of pack ice. The way that this boy shares the events makes the reader feel as if they are also experiencing them. I was very engaged while reading the diary entries. The big idea of the book is to share a boy’s experiences in Antarctica and to provide information on this spectacular continent. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione
