THE EPIC NEW THRILLER BEGINS. The creator of the number one bestselling SKULDUGGERY PLEASANT series returns with the story of a girl on the run from everything she loves... and the monsters that await her. For anyone who ever thought their parents were monsters... Amber Lamont is a normal sixteen-year-old. Smart but insecure, she spends most of her time online, where she can avoid her beautiful, aloof parents and their weird friends. But when a shocking encounter reveals a horrifying secret, Amber is forced to go on the run. Killer cars, vampires, undead serial killers and red-skinned, horned demons - Amber hurtles from one threat to the next, revealing the terror woven into the very fabric of her life. As her parents close in behind her, Amber's only chance rests with her fellow travellers, who are not at all what they appear to be... Witty, action-packed and heart-stoppingly thrilling, Demon Road will take you on an epic road-trip across the supernatural landscape of America.… (altro)

The best novel I've read by Landy! It also has the best reason to get rid of the parents I've ever come across in teen fantasy. I suspect its inspiration resides heavily in the TV show, Supernatural, and the level of explicit horror was startling. Trade-mark Landy quiping and comic-relief idiot are all present and correct, though toned down compared to early Skulduggery Pleasant. ( )

Yes not a bad effort from the man who brought us Skulduggery Pleasant! In this story poor Amber learns something sinister about herself when she is attacked by two guys on her way home from the takeaway shop were she works. She doesn't just defend herself but she annihilates them ans when she tells her parents they are beyond happy. What is going on? They have cared nothing for her in the past and then suddenly she id flavor of the month!
Amber is seriously spooked about what has happened and it only Imelda who sets her straight - Amber is a demon, born of demon parents who have made a pact with the Shining Demon for immortality - they eat their own children! Amber must flee with the help of Milo ( a serial killer who is possessed by his antique car) and Glen, an Irish guty who has been given the mark of death and has only a few days to deliver it to a certain person in the US before he dies himself.
Once again, Landy has woven a complex web of plots and characters. Amber is ok but Milo is not - there is not enough given as to why he is willing to protect Amber - money alone can't be the reason.
Loved Ambers' lame demon parents who are the quintessential fake - we love you but we don't - yuppie type. Be interesting to see how the next book pans out. Not as good as Skulduggery but it kept me engaged. ( )

This is the first Derek Landy I have read and while it was very readable I felt it could have been more tightly edited. Some of the characters conversations were a little repetitive and the fight scenes sometimes lacked clarity in the action. Overall not a bad start to a series (this is set in the same world as Landy's Skulduggery Pleasant but follows an entirely new set of characters as far as I can tell) and one I will recommend to 12 aged readers.
I have been told that this book is aimed at an older audience than the Skulduggery books but not having read that series I cannot comment whether that is true.
What I can tell you is:
- there is NO sex / sexual situations
- while there is violence I didn't think it horrifying
- there are horror themes (witches / vampires / demons)
- people die
Overall this was less violent than Hunger Games and very much less violent than the Gone series.
Of course the series may well evolve so that information applies only to this first book.
