Really funny story of Inge Maria, coming to Bornholm to live with her grandmother. 1911 Denmark, with farm chores and church and rote learning in school -- thank goodness Inge Maria is there to liven it up! Some serious conversations about losing loved ones (Inge Maria has just lost her mom and her dad died when she was a baby; Klaus is also grieving). Not a lot of consequences for some serious mischief, but then, the mischief isn't really all that serious, and it's great to see the adults kind of blink and giggle in response. ( )

In 1911 Denmark Inge Marie loses her mother and has to travel to a remote island to live with a Grandmother she does not know. Inge tries hard to be good but also loves a good laugh and trouble seems to follow her everywhere. She makes connections to her new home and finds love in strange new places. Whimsical and fun. ( )

Meh. Too much tell, not enough show. ( )

A cute book, and a quick read. We grabbed this book from the library because it was on my 10-year-old's summer reading list. It seemed a little easy for a 6th grade level reading list, in my opinion. But it was interesting to get a glimpse of Denmark in 1911, especially with rural vs urban comparisons. The main character is fun and has a good heart and good intentions.

When Mischief Came to Town is a great story about a girl named Inge. The book starts out with Inge moving to a new place to live with her grandmother after her mother has passed away. After first meeting her grandmother, Inge is nervous because her grandmother is strict and seems unfriendly. As the book progresses Inge and her grandmother begin to build a beautiful relationship. Inge is a child that gets into mischief, in the end it helps bring adventure to her grandmother and the town and helps Inge to build new amazing relationships.

This book was fun to read and had so many interesting characters, In just the first chapter I was pulled in by all the colorful vocabulary. This book would be great to have for children in the classroom who were struggling with using descriptive words in their writing. ( )
