Abraham Dee Bartlett fell in love with animals at a young age and grew up learning as much about them as possible. His love transformed the zoo into the modern version we know today–one where animals live in their natural habitats, receive proper care, and offer the public a chance to learn about and love them. Timeline, Author’s Note, Bibliography.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. The book in elevated by its gorgeously detailed and elaborate illustrations. I'm always happy to bee a new biographical picture book about a lesser-known figure, especially for who lends themselves to a further investigation of a STEM field. Animal and zoo lovers are sure to be delighted.

I received this book as part of the LibraryThing early reviewer giveaway. It was a nicely illustrated introduction to the life of Abraham Dee Bartlett and his major role in developing the zoo as we know it today. Great for a teacher introducing a unit on zoo animals or zookeeping. ( )

Beautiful realistic paper-cutout illustrations accompany this story of the life of the man who loved animals as a child, and grew up to become the director of the London Zoo for 38 years, from 1859-1897. Abraham Dee Bartlett introduced better ways to care for animals, how to create natural enclosures and eliminate cages, how to give wild animals a balanced diet, and other at-the-time groundbreaking practices for humane zookeeping. He came up with the idea to post signs with information about the animals for visitors to learn about the animal' habitat, food, etc. (a radical idea in the early days of just putting an animal in a cage and having people stare at it, with only the name of the animal on a sign). As a child, he was self-taught, would read books on everything that interested him; he worked at a natural history museum doing taxidermy and his excellent work there caught the attention of the London Zoo trustees. He preferred working with live animals anyway! This picture book gives a short bibliography and timeline. Lovely picture book for younger readers; loved the endpapers with quotations and anecdotes from books about the London Zoo (sources given but very tiny on the CIP page)--for example, when the reptile house opened, it was the first one in the world, but only heated by stoves, so the reptiles were given woolen blankets for warmth!! A nice brief biography about Abraham Dee Bartlett and how he influenced modern zoos. The book is beautifully illustrated with a paper collage style which adds dimension to the images. While I would have loved more information about Dee Bartlett, I thought the author covered a good amount and connected aspects of his life to something we can all relate to. A good read for elementary aged children. I received a copy of this book as an early reviewer from the publisher through LibraryThing.
