This was such an adorable book. I think any kid who's ever felt like they've had a hard time making friends will love this book. (I think anyone will love it, but the shy, quiet types will appreciate it even more.) ( )

Naar de zee. Door Cale Atkinson.

Na Jip Ahoi is dit het tweede zee-boek van Cale Atkinson. Wederom is het prachtig geschreven en getekend. En hoewel ik fan was van Jip Ahoi ben ik nog meer fan van Naar de zee.

In dit boek is het kleurgebruik soberder, zijn de woorden spaarzamer en dat maakt het geheel tot een uitgepuurde parel. Het verhaal van Tim, die zich op school onzichtbaar voelt, en Sam de walvis, die de weg naar huis niet meer weet, is poëtisch ontroerend. De vriendschap tussen beide wezens is van een grote schoonheid, mede door de paginavullende overweldigende tekeningen.

Naar de zee is een gedicht in boekvorm. Het is een hart onder de riem voor iedereen die zich wel eens niet gezien voelt. Een donker boek dat licht brengt en je hart verwarmt. Benieuwd naar het volgende (zee)-boek van Atkinson, ik ben fan! ( )

The story here was cute, but nothing special...what really got me were the illustrations. Look at the whale's face! I want to squish it :3

"To the Sea" is a tale about Tim who finds a whale named Sam stuck on land and in need of help getting back to the sea. Tim soon befriends Sam and comes up with a bunch of plans to help get Sam back to the sea. This picture book is actually a pretty touching story that can feel relatable to children who don't have many friends and can feel invisible at school. It gets into themes about loyalty, friendship, and compassion. The art in the book is well done, but you can notice that the illustrations are dark to help set a more somber tone. This book is best suited for elementary students of all ages. I could see myself using this book to help convey ideas of friendship and compassion to students.
