Life seems perfect in the quiet community of Valley Farm. Then a shocking discovery shatters the silence. The owners of a big country house have employed a house-sitter, a young ecologist, to look after the place while they're away. But his dead body is found by the side of the lane??a lonely place to die.

Very cleverly plotted crime story, with the perpetrator only being revealed almost at the end, with few clues to their identity or motive, but which when revealed made perfect sense! The author makes good use of her varied experience to infuse the story with background colour and authenticity. ( )

In Valley Farm, a quiet hamlet in Northumberland two bodies are discovered. What is the connection between them, what possible motive for their deaths. It is up to Detective Inspector Vera Stanhope and her team to discover the murderer before another body is found. What secrets do the three couple have that live in the Valley Farm development.
A nice little mystery and a satisfying story, and the style of writing was easy to read.

I want to like these. But overall, the TV series is actually better than the books (and often quite different). The characters in this one are many and difficult to keep straight. Cleeves works too hard at explaining Vera, Joe, and Holly - interior monologues abound - but leaves others opaque. And Cleeves cheats: Holly discovers a crucial piece of information, but it is not shared with us. If we know everything about Holly's internal fussing and fuming and the color of her bedroom curtains and the kind of tea she drinks, then we should also know this. But it sets up the plot for the "surprise" ending because: Voila! Holly and Vera know the secret that no one else does. Disappointing. ( )

Two murder victims, in two different places. A connection between them that takes time to tease out. A community of “retired hedonists” who are up in each other’s business, and everyone else’s. The valley has lured them here to enjoy peace and quiet, just like the moths being lured to the moth catchers in the garden of one of the murder victims. Vera and her team have a lot of obscure connections to dig out and a deep well of secrets to discover.

This wasn’t one of my favourite Vera installments, to be honest. Some of that could be down to me feeling restless, and some of that may be down to the book seeming to rely on characters hiding, or not sharing, information to advance the plot. I kept expecting people to be killed immediately after figuring out this information, which was a stressful way to read. ( )
