Cartier-Bresson heeft gefotografeerd tussen 1931 (na een opleiding tot schilder) en halverwege de jaren 70. Daarna borg hij zijn fototoestel op en ging hij weer schilderen. In het boek staan ook foto's van zijn schilderijen, maar die vind ik toch minder dan zijn foto's. Cartier-Bresson heeft als fotograaf de term "het beslissende moment" bedacht, dat moment waarop alle omstandigheden ideaal zijn om een foto te maken. Foto's zijn oa uit Parijs, de Verenigde Staten, China, India, de Sovjet-Unie, Ivoorkust, Indonesië waaronder tal van reportagefoto's en ook een aantal portretten van schrijvers en kunstenaars.
