Filled with magic, adventure, and mythology pulled deep from Russian and Finish folklore, Cry of the Firebird is a dark fantasy that dives deep into the world of magic, pitting those who would abuse it against those sworn to protect it. Perfect for fans of Neil Gaiman.A firebird is reborn on the borders of Russia, a gate to a world of monsters and magic is breaking, and only a reluctant, untrained shaman stands in the way of a flood of supernatural darkness...Anya is still reeling from the death of her grandfather when a strange encounter with the Finnish God of the Dead changes her life forever: Her family has been guarding the gates to the Russian otherworld on their farm for centuries, and she's the new gatekeeper. Worse, if she doesn't awaken her magical abilities and assume her new role, the gate will break, unleashing a flood of monsters and dark gods into their world. As Anya struggles to make sense of her changing world, she can't deny the strange encounters. She'll need to accept her fate and work with the legendary firebird if she hopes to survive-and protect humanity.… (altro)

I absolutely love this!!! The Addition of folklore being added to the book hooked me from the start!!! It ends in a cliffhanger so i cant wait to read the next book to see what happens! ( )

Weaving folklore and mythology into the present day, this book brings the reader into a world of both the mundane and the magical, intertwined in one of the least likely places - a small farm on the edge of Russia. The story overall is well written, and while it doesn't flow as smoothly as I would have liked, the plot is solid. The characters and world-building are where this book truly shines. Anya has her world turned upside down, but she rises to the challenge, even through the darkest moments of her grief. I will warn you - this is hard to put down once you start reading, so keep that in mind! ( )

This the first book that I have read by this author. It mixes fantasy, folklore and legend together with a lot of magic - and there is even an elf in the mix. I really enjoyed the books and loved the characters. I am so happy this is part of a series. I can’t wait to read the next book! I highly recommend it.

I love books based on folklore from other countries and this one did not disappoint. If you're a fan of Naomi Novik I think you'll enjoy the first book in this series. ( )

I received this advanced pdf copy from library thing's early reviewers program in exchange for a honest review, and here it is:
I had already read "the inmortal city, the first instalment/volume" of "the magicians of Venice" series and liked it very much indeed.
This book is the first of a new "firebird" series and I found it just as entertaining and a page-turner as the other one.
I indeed love this author
Here it is not Atlantis, like in the Venice/inmmortal city series, but I also loved the author's mixture of mithology and folklore (in this case finnish (it is understandable, the autor is of finnish origin)/nordic/russian/slavic mainly, but also roman/greek classic).
Of course the story is lef in a cliffhanger, and I very much would like to read the next book.
Characters interesting and lovable... and hot :) both boys and girls (a little too much vodka in occasion imo :)). And Aramis is not who I thought he would be, but much ok.
All in all, if you have tastes a bit like mine (fantasy, action...) I can highly recommend it. ( )
